TECHNIQUE TUESDAY🛠

How often does your back ache or feel strained after prolonged bending? Something as mundane as doing house chores or garden work can really be a pain.

Bending is not as easy as it seems. It requires a balanced combination of mobility and stability. Too often, people bend forward by looking down and leading with their heads. The spine forms an unprotected “C” shape, as seen in the first 3 incorrect bends in this video. This type of rounding (spinal flexion) can be dangerous, especially if we’re lifting something heavy or in the gym doing a basic deadlift.

The best way to protect your spine while bending over, whether it’s to pick something up or put something down is to hinge the hips

Hinging requires an engaged core and a backwards shift of weight. As the hips shift behind the heels, this allows the center of mass (abdominal region) to be aligned over the feet, not in front of the feet. This helps keep the spine stabilized and protected as we load or unload the body. To come up, we raise the torso as a stable unit. Keeping the spine straight and extending up with our legs, never by rounding our back.
